Step 1: Overview

In this tutorial, you will learn the steps to install the Ubuntu Desktop on your laptop or PC. What you will need to do for this installation?

• A laptop or PC which has at least storage space free of 25GB.
• A USB flash drive with at least 8GB space or 12GB or above is recommended to avoid problems.

You need these two things to install Ubuntu Desktop on your PC or laptop. If you are installing Ubuntu Desktop on your previously used laptop or PC then it is recommended to backup your important data. Otherwise, this installation will delete all your data stored on your laptop or PC. If you are installing Ubuntu Desktop on the new laptop or PC then you will not need to backup because your laptop is already empty. You can also install Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 on SSD. This will increase the speed of the PC or laptop.

Step 2: Download an Ubuntu Desktop Installation File

You have to download an Ubuntu Desktop installation file from here. Make sure to save it to a safe location that you will not forget in the future. For this tutorial, we use Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS release.

Step 3: Make sure to create a Bootable USB Flash Drive

To install Ubuntu Desktop 22.04, you have to write the downloaded ISO to a USB flash drive to create an installation media. For this, you have to download the version of balenaEtcher according to your operating systems like Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Now, Select your downloaded ISO of Ubuntu Desktop 22.04. After that select your USB flash drive, and then click flash to install Ubuntu Desktop.

Step 4: Boot from your USB Flash Drive to Install Ubuntu Desktop

Now, insert your USB flash drive ( which you have made bootable in step 3 ) into your laptop or PC. After that, reboot or restart your laptop or PC. It recognizes the installation media automatically. If it doesn’t do so, then press the F12 or F10, or F2 key to boot. Otherwise, if you don’t know the boot key then you should see it on the screen when you restart your PC or laptop. There is mentioned the Boot key is on the right, left, up, or downside of the screen when you restart your PC or laptop.

Now, you should see the Welcome screen asking you to either try or install Ubuntu.

To continue, click on Install Ubuntu. Now you will be asked to select your keyboard layout or language. Select according to your language. After choosing the language, click Continue.

Step 5: Installation Setup for Ubuntu Desktop

Now, you will be asked to select whether the Normal installation or Minimal installation. The minimal installation is useful for those people which have smaller hard drives. Or who don’t need as many pre-installed applications or games.

In Other Options of Normal installation, you have to download updates as well as third-party software. So, these software updates may improve device support and performance during the installation. It is recommended to tick both options. make sure that you are connected to the internet throughout this installation.

Step 6: How to manage Drive Options or Drive Management

This panel permits you to configure your installation. If you like Ubuntu Desktop to be the only operating system on your laptop or PC, select Erase disk and install Ubuntu Desktop. Again make sure you have a backup of your important data stored on your hard disk drive (HDD) or solid disk drive (SSD).

Step 7: (Optional) Enable Encryption

If you would like to encrypt your laptop or PC, select Advanced features> Use LVM with the new Ubuntu Desktop installation > Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security.

After choosing your security key, click Install Now and confirm the changes which you have made.

Step 8: Choose your Location ( Where you live )

Step 9: Submit Your Credential (Log In) Detail

• Choosing into sending device information to Canonical to help improve Ubuntu Desktop. (by default, Canonical doesn’t collect device information)
• Activating your area locating services.
• Downloading further apps from Ubuntu Desktop Software.

Step 11: Tip: Do not forget to update Ubuntu Desktop
